Sierra Maestra Mountains

The Sierra Maestra is a mountain range that rises almost straight up from the southeastern coastline. It is the highest area in Cuba and includes the highest point, Pico Turquino, at 1974 meters, which is crowned with a bronze bust of the national hero José Martí.

Fidel Castro established his headquarters in these mountains in 1958, after a year on the run. He picked this spot because of its inaccessibility and the fact that the camp would be invisible from the air. As a result, Batista’s soldiers were never able to attack the camp successfully.
